Babyland

Babyland was a performance based, self described “independent electronic junk punk” band from Los Angeles, California.

The band consisted of Dan Gatto on vocals and electronics(primarily synths and an old Macintosh computer), and Michael Smith on percussion(primarily a DIY percussion kit made of old oil drums, rebar, and engine parts, with the occasional use of power tools)

Formed in 1989, they espoused a DIY punk ethic and had amassed a large following in the underground music scene, primarily playing local clubs, including LA’s Jabberjaw, The Smell, and 924 Gilman in Berkley. Their live performances featured use of power tools and air freshener as instruments.

The band performed with a number of other artists, including The Offspring, Ethyl Meatplows, and Grotus.

They dissolved in 2009, after Michael Smith quit the band. Dan Gatto decided not to continue Babyland alone, and started his solo project called “Continues”. Just before the band dissolved, they were offered to go on tour with Skinny Puppy, where they were supposed to be the opening act.
