Lesedi Azisiwe “AZi.” Mgcini Phaahla is a South African rapper, singer/songwriter, record producer and audio engineer from Johannesburg.
Born on 24 May 1999, AZi. lived with his mother until her death in 2008. From then on he lived with his father, which led him to discover his passion for music. He began writing songs and rapping at the age of 12. He recorded his first song at age 14 in his cousin’s bedroom studio.
At age 18 he began rapping seriously even going on to form a rap group and record label, The Shed Records. The Shed disbanded in early 2018. AZi went on to form another group, LOTOV. LOTOV is a record label, fashion label, media and production company as well as an alternative rap group.
AZi’s unique style has been characterised as a blend of lo-fi, jazz rap, neo soul, bedroom pop and electronica.
His biggest influences are Kanye West, Steve Lacy, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler The Creator, James Blake, Mac Miller, Smino and SABA.
