Alan T Charly
Alan Thomas Charly (born October 2nd, 1997), better known as Alan T Charly, is a producer and singer from Kerala, India. His music is an intoxicating blend of Lo-Fi Hip Hop mixed with touches of R&B, Indie, Soul, and Trap that would be equally at home in the charts of Europe and North America.
Alan’s journey into music began in 2015 when he wrote his first song off a prompt given by a friend while preparing for his medical school entrance exams. This experience was transformative, revealing his creative potential for the first time. At 18, this realisation changed everything for him.
He spent the next two years writing lyrics and melodies inspired by artists like Ed Sheeran, twenty one pilots, Radiohead, and Joy Division. In 2018, while in med school, he found inspiration in Lil Peep, Joji, and Nick Mira to start producing music on FL Studio. YouTuber Simon Servida became his go-to source for production tutorials.
Alan began his recording career on June 25th, 2020, with the release of his first single, Afloat. His first taste of success came with the single City Lights, featuring his buddy and fellow Malayali artist $t Jimmy. It was released on September 10th, 2020. He quickly followed this with his debut EP, Hang Me Up, on December 3rd, 2020, which was his last release of the year.
His sophomore EP, One of Those Days, came out on August 5th, 2021, and its second single, Stay, featured his childhood friend and fellow producer Nikhil Krishna. Following this, Alan dropped a single titled Somedays I Wanna Kill My Mind, featuring Australian rapper Riv Musix, on August 24th, 2021. This track served as the first single from his debut album, Everybody’s Hurting. The album, released on February 10th, 2022, explores the dynamics of his relationship with his former girlfriend. The title was inspired by his journey from feeling hurt by their differences to realising they had both caused each other pain, leading him to embrace and appreciate what they had. The release date marked one year of their relationship.
In the interim, Alan created a vocal edit of the hit lo-fi track Runs Dry by Australian producer Jake Jurant and German lo-fi artist l’eupe. Released on December 19th, 2021, through Chilled Cat Music, this track became Alan’s most successful song to date and his only release through a label.
Graduating from med school and moving to a new city to be close to his girlfriend proved to be a defining experience for Alan. While pursuing a job and trying to sustain their relationship, things turned toxic, leading to their separation. This period of personal growth and self-discovery significantly influenced his music and artistic direction.
After a two-year hiatus, Alan T Charly is back with renewed creative energy. His music, characterised by melancholic and soulful themes, continues to resonate deeply with audiences, serving as a cathartic escape from life’s struggles.
