Ado

Born in Tokyo, Japan on October 24, 2002, Ado (アド) is arguably one of Japan’s most popular solo singers under CloudNine, and is best known for her remarkable and powerful vocals.

The meaning behind Ado’s name was first explained by Ado herself on her documentary:

I got the name “Ado” from the Japanese language textbook. “Shite” and “Ado” were names of actors in Kyogen performances. I thought “Ado” sounded cool. I simply decided to use it because of how it sounded. I learned that “Shite” is the main actor and “Ado” is the supporting actor. As a supporting character, I’d be really happy if I could be a support to someone’s life.

Ado spent her early days listening to Vocaloid and cover songs. Inspired by the dream of becoming an utaite, she began singing and uploading cover songs to her Niconico (ニコニコ) channel in 2017. Ado revealed that she originally used her closet with soundproofing as her recording studio when she began uploading cover songs.

On October 23, 2020, Ado officially debuted with “うっせぇわ (Usseewa),”. The digital single became a massive hit and reached #1 spot on the Billboard Japan Hot 100. On December 24, 2020, following the success of her debut single, Ado released her second single, “レディメイド (Readymade)”. The subsequent releases of “ギラギラ (Gira Gira)” and “踊 (Odo)” have further allowed Ado to rose to fame in the international scene through its catchy lyrics and energetic melody.

In 2021, Ado won the Best New Asian Artist Japan at the 2021 MAMA Awards and was also the second Japanese female artist selected for YouTube’s Artist on the Rise.

In the following months, it was revealed that Ado would provide the singing voice of ウタ (Uta) in the world-renowned anime film One Piece Film: Red. On June 8, 2022, Ado released the film’s theme song, “New Genesis,” which hit #1 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for six consecutive weeks. The song also became the first-ever Japanese song to reach #1 on Apple Music’s Top 100: Global Chart.

In August 2022, Ado released her soundtrack album, ウタの歌 (Uta no Uta) ONE PIECE FILM RED, which broke numerous records—becoming the first artist in Billboard Japan history with three tracks in the Top 3 on the Japan Hot 100, later surpassing it with six tracks in the Top 10.
