Naming themselves after the Technics SL-1200 turntable, 1200 Techniques is one of the first Australian hip hop outfits to break into the mainstream there as “an alternative band with elements of old school hip hop, rock, funk and electro”. Their 2001 single “Hard As Hell” got the band’s career going when it became popular on Australia’s Triple J Radio.

Their first album Choose One followed soon after. It spawned the Australian top 40 “Karma” which later won ‘Best Independent Release’ and ‘Best Video’ at the 2002 ARIA Awards, also helping the album get nominated for ‘Breakthrough Artist – Album’ that year.

In 2003, their song “Eye Of The Storm” from their sophomore album Consistency Theory was a minor hit on the Australian pop chart, and earned the band two more ARIA nominations. Its second single “Where Ur At” was more successful, becoming the band’s second Australian top 40 and helping get the band yet another ARIA nomination in 2004 – this time for ‘Best Urban Album’.

In 2005, the group went on hiatus so its members could pursue solo effort ambitions. The hiatus lasted nine years, ended in 2014 by the release of the crowd-funded EP Time Has Come. The vinyl edition of it includes the bonus track “Flow Is Trouble” featuring Ghostface Killah.

In 2021, the band was scheduled to perform live for the first time in over five years but the gig was postponed then canceled. In 2023, they performed at E4 Hip Hop Festival and at the ARIA Awards.
