She said “do you realize there’s nothing keeping us here at all?”

We leaned there stunned, went home and filled a plastic pool on the roof

We drank wine and touched each other, it got cool but we stayed in the water

Hearing city birds, floating oh so slowly back to our twin minds

Our debts and grudges and thirsts

I cannot explain that summer

I cannot explain that summer

The salvation of a cold beer in a scalding shower when

She brought me back to drops beading on flesh I forgot I had

Every failure came to haunt me cause I thought to be a man

Was to never lose or question I looked all around at them

Studied their expensive clothing, nonchalance studied their hands

On the tight curves of their women wondered who had taught them how

To see only one way

By and by the pool grew a city of green algae and scum

The dog came round to cool his fast heart from the sun

And the water grew opaque

More and more each day

Like a strange accusation

I cannot explain that summer

I cannot explain that summer

The salvation of a cold beer in a scalding shower when

She brought me back to drops beading on flesh I forgot I had

Every failure came to haunt me with the coffee growing cold

Christmas lights forgot and burned out in the rain out on the porch

Like a dreamer who's still dreaming I just can’t stop fucking up

I tried so hard, I tried so hard to be perfect but I’m not

As if that would have been enough
