Stellarvore
In Chaos Gnosticism, the ancient Dragon is Azerate, a personficiation of the anti-cosmic forces of Chaos.
This leaves less ambiguity as to whether the titular “stellarvore” is a black hole, a gateway to the primordial No-thingness, or both, leaning much more towards the latter. Samael (Hebrew meaning “venom of God”) is, in Chaos-Gnostic tradition, another name for Satan, although in Jewish mythology, is a punishing archangel who serves God. Within the context of these lyrics, Satan/Samael is the black hole, a gateway to the primordial Chaos.
These lyrics can be understood in two possible ways, or even both: a gateway to the primal darkness from before creation, or a personification of a black hole in the form of Satan (“the Serpent”). Black holes “devour” stars and any form of light or life within close proximity to them. The point at which nothing can escape a black hole is known as the event horizon.
In a 2013 interview, Erik discussed the black hole symbolism:
“I’m not saying that you’re right or wrong about “Stellarvore” being about a black hole. I don’t like to put that kind of a frame around my music, but it definitely does have references to it, and it’s got a lot of references to a destiny that will be proved. It’s got references to a prophecy that cannot be altered, about an end that cannot be avoided. And whether or not that will happen in the shape of a black hole, or an end that is even more terrible than that, we shall see.”
In Greek, Agios Daimon means “demon saint” or “demonic saint”.
In Chaos Gnosticism, the faith which Watain adheres to and often bases their songs around, the Tree of Death is the opposite of the Tree of Life found in Kabbalah/Qabalah, a school of though found in Jewish Mysticism. Instead of the 10 sefirot that the Tree of Life consists of, the Tree of Death has 10 Qlippoth that represent evil and impure forces.
