Masque

On Masque

Thumbnail

Hidden, lying behind a stone effigy

A snake in human form

Venal in its being

Devotee of a cursed craft

The mask betrays the devil in the detail

A reptilian if we may

Hidden is the lie but is spoken as if truth

Cleave with spite, smashed idols

Greatest sanity is assured before the fall

Slavish loyalty to an empire of dust

An impure hatred baths in an abject lust

Abominations, pestilent rats run

Cascading towards the setting sun

Palaces bejeweled, bone in stone

Tethered by sinews of flesh

Abominations, pestilent rats run

Cascading towards the setting sun

Eyes lift to see obsequious venality

And knows that a blade must thrust

To remove that masque for eternity

Eyes lift to see cast low to trample under foot

A mocking indifference to the bearers of nobility

Perpetual scorn to be rid of all

And yet like an acorn comes a great oak tall
