Used as an allegory for support or help, he helped someone who is incapable of doing things on his/her own. As there is a thing as “too much help”, the one who asked for help in turn slowly becomes too dependent in that person.
The singer always knew how things would turn out, maybe because, when faced with the same choices, the subject also encountered the same failures and tried to warn the subject. Still, he does not leave the subject to suffer this failure alone, singing “lead me down, down, down” to indicate that he is willing to take this fall alongside the subject.
It is clear throughout the song that this is an extremely dysfunctional relationship, but the singer and subject cannot give it up because of the fact that they have grown to need each other. The singer especially seems aware that the subject is holding them back to some extent, but he still lets them “lead [him] down” because he just cannot let go.
This song served as the finale for the band’s YouTube series, “Ralph’s Balcony”, where Ralph and friends did covers of various songs.
Whereas most of the episodes were actually done on the balcony, there were too many friends involved in Choices to fit. The twenty musicians (which included To Kill A King, Emily Wood, and half of Bastille) had to move to the back garden, which is ironically sunny and green.

Summer could be a reference to the relationship, or the excitement and happiness that came with the relationship. After all, summer is a season related to cheerfulness, fun (and maybe intensity).
This could be implying that the relationship, and the excitement that came with it, is coming to an end.
