Moon over my shoulder

Pale on the garage

While I try not to think about

Where I am going or where I've been

Two paces out of my back door

The collar of my dog

Jangling out from the shadows

Is the world really so small?

Soon, night will be over

I'll hear it in the chorus of birdsong

While the neighborhood

Warms in the light of

The coming day

What seemed so overwhelming?

What passed across my soul

To make me feel undeserving

Of a world so rich and full?

And as the day reveals its missions

Tasks get done, miles get driven

Plans are made, things are tough

Things are great, but soon…

That moon over my shoulder

Beckoning me out

Will it bring peace and slumber?

Or another night of doubt?
