[Intro]

This is all kind of a mass culture, we live in

And it makes you, you look

You look like something or act like something that you really aren’t

You know, it’s like, um, a falseness

It’s like a mass personality

Just made me so narrow, that I couldn’t, really, do

I gave myself justice

So, I just broke totally away from that whole mighty damn thing

They had a lot of rules and regulations which just didn’t fit with me you know

I wanna do this the way I wanna do it

I wanna determine my own destiny

I wanna determine how I am to speak on a stage

I don’t wanna be a mass personality

I don’t wanna be a one dimension

I wanna bе me

I wanna be human

They are very serious kinds of artists

They approach their, their craft as it’s a life, a way of life

A form of relaxation

It’s a form of emotional release

I felt raised, I felt lifted

And I realised that once I began to take my art form seriously, that, the divinity, would wrap me

Gave me a discipline

It gave me, um, an ability to, to expand my mental power

Because then I had to begin to analyse

And look into all this emotion, all this feeling

And all of this gave me a-a-a-a sense of totalness

I-I need to be in an atmosphere that is free, that is open, that is striving for truth

And not somebody else dictating to you how to do your thing

And I used to sit there all day and listen to all those beautiful voices, you know, black voices

And because of that, I got very involved with blackness
