Aquarium

A first date is hard enough, so what do you do when you’re at your last?

It’s a lonely aquarium, we look around at the plastic grass, animals silently drifting past

Did you see me there? Reflected like a phantom in the blue

Drowning when I’m standing next to you

I can’t breathe, I don’t dare

‘Cause then you’re gonna ask if something’s wrong

I can’t say I’ve been drowning all along

It’s over before it’s over

I just know from your empty red stare

It’s over before it’s over

Let me go ‘cause it’s a breath of fresh air

To crack this aquarium

Midnight highway ride, both of us fading into the black

Triangle of light, passenger side, a single beam

I don’t know why, but it speaks to me

It’s a gleam of peace, like maybe there’s a crack inside the glass

I’ve been so afraid to let it crash

You disagree when I’m me

And I love everything you don’t allow

I try to speak and it’s just bubbles now

It’s over before it’s over

I just know from your empty red stare

It’s over before it’s over

Let me go ‘cause it’s a breath of fresh air

To crack this aquarium

Damn it, here comes the conversation, I can feel the water draining from my soul, from my soul

I say it and you know I have to start to crack myself in half to make me whole

We both know that…

It’s over before it’s over

I just know from your empty red stare

It’s over before it’s over

Let me go ‘cause it’s a breath of fresh air

To crack this aquarium

It’s over before it’s over

I just know from your empty red stare

I’ve been faltering underwater

For so long, but it’s a breath of fresh air

To crack this aquarium
