On Getting Ready

[Chorus]

Buying stuff, trying stuff, denying stuff

Hiding stuff, riding stuff, igniting stuff

Eating stuff, feeding stuff, reading stuff

Needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff

[Verse 1]

She prefers chasing Chanel to changing the channels

Channeling her churning desire for things in life she can handle

And unfortunately, those things are all virtual or material

In other words, fake; fulfillment neither mystic nor cryptic

It’s just artificialness that drives her internal motivations

Whether it’s the aforementioned stuff or currency that brings sensation

To the ever-zealous mind that can be tricked countless times

Across a lifetime to enjoy things that are man-made constructs

Understanding this shallow fulfillment to me, seems not tough

Along with being taught worth is dependent on her purse

She’s been told her whole life, sit still and look pretty

I can’t wrap my head around how this shit hits every city

All the big screens and signs tell us what we want to hear

Because we base our lives around them out of constant fear

It’ll never be enough no matter how much beauty or items

I hate gender stereotypes, but this world likes em

[Chorus]

Buying stuff, trying stuff, denying stuff

Hiding stuff, riding stuff, igniting stuff

Eating stuff, feeding stuff, reading stuff

Needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff

[Verse 2]

He spends his money how he pleases

Often feels tempted to buy those brand-name pieces

Pampered by his culture, he’s become hedonistic

Constantly chasing what he wants and everybody sees it

And nobody can say anything to upset the patriarch

Most guys feels that their confidence is their greatest part

So they ride that wave and their bills get paid

And they can’t say nay to a luxurious day

And the way I feel is ashamed to be male

No offense, my brothers, but you often fail

To see far past what you can do or buy

So all I ask is unglue your eyes

From all that you chase, all that you want

When the world says how high, you say jump

So instead of commanding, consider consoling

Your desires often control thee

[Chorus]

Buying stuff, trying stuff, denying stuff

Hiding stuff, riding stuff, igniting stuff

Eating stuff, feeding stuff, reading stuff

Needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff

[Verse 3]

We all long for the path of least resistance

So we consume the society that we live in

Without pause, without question, without remorse

We often don’t take the time to consider another course

We just buy, buy, buy, and sell, sell, sell

But oh well! From lofty unknown heights, we may have fell

Or we might fall, I mean, we are still up high

But as the prices rise, the lies keep seeming frighteningly up-front

Who’s to say happiness isn’t 6.99

And the elixir that tricks us into happiness is buy

Able. Able to purchase many things, many are

Many do just that daily such as suede cars

Golden watermelons, pickled shoes

I mean, we buy things unreal, and it’s more than a few

I know we all have to buy a lot to survive

But I hope we don’t forget to praise the sky, or something about this life

[Chorus]

Buying stuff, trying stuff, denying stuff

Hiding stuff, riding stuff, igniting stuff

Eating stuff, feeding stuff, reading stuff

Needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff and needing stuff

[Verse 4]

I don’t buy a ton but I buy a bit

I buy a bunch of goods, but they ain’t worth much

What good’s window shopping when all I want’s touch?

IPod nano’s and touch’s outdated

Thousand dollar phones, like, apple, we made it

Made it to the top, the producers and the sellers

Instead of the meek misguided consumers

Try to take a huge bite of what’s offered in this life

Like, wow, that really makes my tooth hurt

Condescending advertisements

I’m insulted, still gon buy it

Nothing’s sacred, nothing’s quiet

Humor, power, sex, and violence

Salesmanship, a once revered skill

Is basically flushed and forgotten

Happiness is based advertising

So we spend and provoke a profit

Don’t go and provoke a prophet

Your ignorance and lost ways, son, they’ll stop it

Rap music’s ads for life, you got it?

The void you feel? Materials won’t block it

This life is yours if you like it or not, kid

So don’t go thinking you’re pure and society’s toxic

Until you find a way to consume only what’s real

You won’t know how it feels to authentically feel

You can forfeit your money to people who don’t know your name

Just to play their game

Just to buy their meals

Just to hire their lawyers who get the sweetest deals

Who for power, greatly feel a strong attraction it seems

And as I contemplate our world, it feels like a dream...

But it’s as real as it is behind the scenes

So my consumerism angst yields nothing supreme

No matter what, I’ve got to be the one who all of my complacency feeds

I’ll just live what I know and buy what I’ve seen

I’ll just live what I know and buy what I’ve seen
