[Verse]
A beep goes off inside
Is it time
Or just a timer?
[Chorus]
You are safe
You are sound
You are safe
You are sound
Ooh
[Post-Chorus]
I feel your frequency
Resonate at my core
Enkindle my extremities
Echo through my bones
[Refrain]
[Verse]
We face apocalypses every day
And fumble stricken phrases
We ball up to play
[Bridge]
Just keep peeling those little oranges
They keep stealing, we keep peeling
Every Great and Snowy Egret's
Speaking of my evening grossness
Every Evening Grosbeak's
Speaking of my great and snowy egress
The ice rink's set to counterclockwise
I lurch along the verge
A strawberryless frozen biscuit
My flimsy figure zero traps
A miraculous lemniscate
When the intercom comes through
I think I've lost my refound calling
Oh, Winter Tanager
You help me walk but you leave me crawling
And I should be so lucky
As to be a part of you at all
[Chorus]
You are safe
You are sound
You are safe
You are sound
[Refrain]
Ooh mm
Ooh mm
Ooh mm
Ooh mm
Ooh mm
Ooh mm
[Outro]
You bring the tropics to these chilly parts
The contrast shocks my system
Chilblains swell upon my heart
Peeling oranges is referring to a repetitive or meditative activity, a coping mechanism.
They keep being hurt (they keep stealing), but they try to move forward anyways (we keep peeling).
It’s unstable, teeter-tottering.
Chilblains – a painful, itching swelling on a hand or foot, caused by poor circulation in the skin when exposed to cold. (I got nuting else)
They have no choice but to conform, to skate.
It’s also mentioned in Stephan’s own explanation of the song that they would go ice skating together, hence the choice of metaphor.
(“having snowball fights and going ice skating with a person I didn’t feel threatened by” –Source is in the About section.)
Stephan’s sparkbird was the Western Tanager.* I believe this is comparing meeting this person to when they first saw a Western Tanager.
*This has been mentioned by them online multiple times, here is a video where they say it.
This sounds like a hiccup in the when sung in the song (GO STEPHEN, YOUR WORDPLAY IS IMMACULATE)
“A little more than kin and less than kind” is from Hamlet, when he’s expressing disdain for his uncle’s marriage to his mother. He feels forced kinship with a man who is not kind to him.
These lyrics are referring to having relatives (they are the aforementioned neo-Puritans) with “old-fashioned” values (we run on different time). They are forced to maintain “kinship” with people who are not kind, who are not accepting.
Refrain sounds like a hiccup when sung

Turning on a dime means to change quickly, these ideals can switch quickly.
They are having fast-spreading but constantly changing neo-Puritan ideals forced onto them, as if being branded.
All of these things make noise, and together they are creating something musical. This is also emphasizing the “winter wonderland” aspect.
Cardinals are often seen as symbols of hope and new beginnings.
