[Intro]

It's not what you expect me to say

But I'mma go ahead and say it anyway

[Verse]

('Cause) I was told I would reach further

If the colour of mi skin was lighter

And I was made to feel inferior

Cah society seh brown girls prettier

Mi love the way mi look

Mi love mi pretty black skin

Respect due to mi strong melanin

Proud of mi colour, love the skin that I'm in

Bun racism, demolish colourism

But the things weh mi a go seh

Yuh might not even have mi back

I get hate from my own race

Yes, that's a fact

'Cause the same black people dem seh I'm too black

And if yuh bleach out yuh skin dem same one come a chat

[Bridge]

Well, since yuh seh that I'm too black for you

I'll please yuh, do I look how you want me to?

Now I'm gonna see if you gonna say I'm too black for you

Or do I look pretty to you?

[Chorus]

Black people hypocrisy

Leave the girls dem with low self-esteem

Unu gwaan like seh yuh haffi brown fi pretty

Fuck di whole of dem dirty inequity

Dis a black people hypocrisy

Leave the girls dem with low self-esteem

I'm black and beautiful, I know I'm pretty

Fuck the whole of dem dirty inequity

[Verse]

Dem seh mi black til mi shine, til mi look dirty

And it's the only line in life that will ever hurt me

Because it never come from a Caucasian, trust mi

Dis a black colorism big hypocrisy

So if I wake up tomorrow look like a browning, oh!

Automatically mi would a carry di swing

Nuff a unnuh nah go like di song yah mi sing

Because nuff a unnuh guilty fi di same damn thing

What's your perception of a pretty woman ( tell me )

Is it straight nose with her hair well long? ( Tell me )

Black girls lose self-confident

Cause they attach the word "ugly" to our complexion

[Bridge]

Well, since yuh seh that I'm too black for you

I'll please yuh, do I look how you want me to?

Now I'm gonna see if you gonna say I'm too black for you

Or do I look pretty to you?

[Chorus]

Black people hypocrisy

Leave the girls dem with low self-esteem

Unu gwaan like seh yuh haffi brown fi pretty

Fuck di whole of dem dirty inequity

Dis a black people hypocrisy

Leave the girls dem with low self-esteem

I'm black and beautiful, I know I'm pretty

Fuck the whole of dem dirty inequity

[Outro]

(It's not what you expect me to say

But I'mma go ahead and say it anyway)

“Mi love the way mi look Mi love mi pretty black skin Respect due to mi strong melanin Proud of mi colour, love the skin that I’m in”

I’m in love with my melanin. I love who I am. I wouldn’t give it up or trade it for anyone else. I just think my skin is beautiful. And for me, I believe in loving yourself. Loving the skin that you’re in. Appreciating yourself for who you are and don’t try to be someone else. That’s just me. I’m really in love with my melanin and I love the way I look. And so I just wanted those words to be inside of the song. Love the way my look. Love my pretty black skin.

“What’s your perception of a pretty woman (tell me) Is it straight nose with her hair well long? (Tell me)”

Beauty comes from within. Me asking them the question, what’s your perception of a pretty woman, is because again, society makes you feel if you are a black woman, you’re probably not pretty enough then. Because you don’t have long hair, and a brown skin tone. And straight nose. And it goes on. So I was about to get deeper in the song, but I stopped there. But I stopped there. So I was asking them the question. What’s your perception of a pretty woman? Does it matter her hair? Does it matter how she looks? Does it matter her complexion? Does it matter her skin tone? If she have a straight nose? So I’m asking them. What’s your perception of a pretty woman?

“But the things weh mi a go seh Yuh might not even have mi back”

That means that things that I’m about to say, you might not agree with me. So when I say you might not even have my back, you may not even agree with me. Or say yes, I’m down with that. So that’s really what that line was about. Cause it’s what I said after that line. The things I might gon say, you might not even have my back. And the line that came after was, I get hate from my own race, yes that’s a fact. So that’s really what the line meant when I said things I might gon say, you might not even have my back. So it means that you may not agree with what’s coming, with what I’m about to say.

“It’s not what you expect me to say But I’mma go ahead and say it anyway”

Everybody who knows Spice, Queen Adansah, always known for lewd lyrics, excitement songs, verses of energy. Get ‘em something where they can dance on, that’s what they know Spice for. And so, immediately I started out that way, to say it’s not what you expect me to say. ‘Cause maybe they might expect me to say, “ski da da, bum bum, and ray”. Go on with myself. But this song, the starting of this song is reality. 'Cause it’s not what they expected me to say.

“And I was made to feel inferior Cah society seh brown girls prettier”

I feel like society’s making brown girls feel prettier. They sing about them in the song. If they have a music video, they use mostly the lighter skin girls or the lighter skin models because they make it feel like, the brown in, they sing about them in the songs. I don’t want to use the word rush, but they make it feel like if you’re brown you look better. Because of how they act. Men do it all the time to women. So it’s like a big gain when you have brown girl over a darker girl. And so that’s why I say society makes it seem that way. And that’s even what leads to the girls bleaching the skin, because society make them feel like it would work better for them.

As a black woman, I’m going to love myself. I’m going to love black women. So it starts from within the race. So you can’t be fighting against each other in the race, and then you’re talking about racism. So when I say beat racism, and demolish colorism, it’s like the same for the hate. So I just want to totally demolish hate and hate whether which race, it doesn’t matter. Totally. So I want the black communities to start loving themselves. Loving each other first, so that another race can also love us, too. It’s very simple. So I think that’s what I want. That’s what I meant. And what we can do is just start spreading love more. And so, people will want to love you. So within the black community we just need to start loving each other more, start celebrating each other more. Let another race look and say, “Oh, I love the black community, they are so nice and they want someone to love too.” And then everyone can just start loving each other. It doesn’t matter the race.

So it’s basically saying a lot of people won’t like this song, the Black Hypocrisy song, because reality is most of them are guilty of either bashing a girl before, degrading a girl before. Causing a girl to probably bleach her skin. So those words are just saying it. Most dark skinned people may not like the black hypocrisy song because the truth is, most of them are probably responsible for degrading a black woman sometime in their life before.

“Well, since yuh seh that I’m too black for you I’ll please yuh, do I look how you want me to?”

I’m talking to the black community, to say okay, so you were saying that I’m black. Or I’m too black. So now that I’m brown, do you prefer me this way? So that’s what I mean when I say do I look how you want me to? Like, are you happy now? Because again, that’s society. They say you’re too black, they bash you because you’re black, but when you bleach and get brown, they still bash you because you’re brown. So make up your mind. What do you want? You know, is this what you want? Is this what you want from me? That’s basically what those lines mean.

“Dem seh mi black til mi shine, til mi look dirty And it’s the only line in life that will ever hurt me”

It was actually a line that was said from a girl on Facebook. And that was her words that I used to put in the song. And might I add that she also came back and apologized. Cause she heard the lines, and she remembers saying it. And she apologized. And it was two years ago. She said it, but it stuck in my head and I never forget it, because I remember the video was going around. And when I watched it, it wasn’t from a Caucasian. So I was like, whoa. And that’s even what birthed the name of the song, Black Hypocrisy. Because she was black. She was just a lighter tone, but she wasn’t Caucasian. But she was also saying my black till mi shine. And she was a black woman. And those were her words. Dem sey, meaning they say, dem sey mi black til mi shine, til mi look dirty. It was just some words taken from what she was saying on Facebook.

The reason why I feel like some people are being hypocritical in the black community is because when they see a black woman, they don’t love and embrace her. They may bash her or degrade her because of the color of her skin. The day when a black woman bleach, they still bash you and degrade you because of the color of your skin. So that’s why I say it’s hypocritical, that’s why I say it’s black hypocrisy. Cause they’re not appreciating the fact that you’re loving your melanin and you’re loving your skin. They bash you because of it, and then when you go out and try to change it, to fit in society, they still bash you. So that’s why I say, this is black people’s hypocrisy. Because you do have people out there who are bleaching the skin, but I personally believe that society is the reason why these girls are bleaching the skin. Because they’re making it seem like if you have a lighter color, you will look better, or you will more fit in to society. So that’s why I call it black hypocrisy.

“Dis a black people hypocrisy Leave the girls dem with low self-esteem I’m black and beautiful, I know I’m pretty Fuck the whole of dem dirty inequity”

I think that people can do more, social media plays a big part in our daily life right now. Stop going and making bad comments if you see a dark skinned girl. Or telling her she too dark, or she too black, or degrading her because you feel like she black or whatever. Just try to use more positive words, because these girls are starting to feel inferior. And these girls are starting to try to bleach the color to fit in to society. So spread more love, and make the dark skin girls feel more welcome in to society as well. Because they’re beautiful, just the same.

“Black girls lose self-confident Cause they attach the word “ugly” to our complexion”

I continue to use Jamaica because that’s where colorism come from, and that’s where I’m from. In Jamaica, if they say black, the word ugly come after. If they’re arguing, they’re gonna say black ugly-like. That’s the truth. That’s the plain fact. So they attach the word ugly to the complexion, so I’m trying to say that they always use that line. Black and ugly. You’re black and ugly. So they attach the word ugly to the complexion, and that’s what I mean. That’s a popular line also in Jamaica. That they say when they’re arguing with each other.

You know, it’s funny, it even happen now. Everything that’s happening either with my record company and them holding me back and everything. People just always talking about it. It’s something that has always been said to me. It hasn’t effected to me to the part where I’m going to bleach my skin to fit in to society. I’m a very strong person, but like I said, it was for other young girls who is not as strong as me, and who are out there bleaching their skin because they want to please them and because they want to fit in to society. But I, myself, have been strong. I’ve looked overcomings where they’ve made discriminating me because of my color. And, you know, it hasn’t, someone’s opinion of me does not define who I am. To be honest. And so it hasn’t affected me entirely to where I go lost and feel depressed because they’re bashing me. But I just wanted to make a difference for other young girls out there.
