Slothrust has stated before that their lyrics are free association and written based on more abstract feelings than some direct meaning. However, some things can be directly inferred from these line. With the lyrics being so closely similar to the ones on Horseshoe Crab it would hold the same meaning just paraphrased. The narrator is reflecting all the regretful behavior they have been indulging in that would cause them to Wake up feeling empty inside, from hunger and thirst. “Wake up thirsty or not at all” is in reference to the songs title “A Giant Swallow” which has a double meaning with ‘swallow’ being a type of bird as well as an action. This particular line would be referencing the action, since waking up thirsty means you swallowed all of your spit throughout the night.
