The use of “wear them down into insane” could be a further use of the earlier implied Gaslighting, where the “projector” has mentally worn them down and gaslighted them into believing everything they and follow their everyword. But despite this, the speaker saying that is “cannot be me” means that he can see through what this projector is saying, and won’t fall for it.

This could have two meanings. Firstly, the person the speaker is talking about is described as a “Projector”, so this has the connotation of the person in question ‘projecting’ onto him.

Alternatively, however, it could also be referencing Gaslighting, a form of manipulation that essentially aims to make someone question what they think is right.

Shows that this person is adamant that they are correct, and perhaps are attempting to gaslight the speaker into believing they are wrong instead.

The word projector as used within the song has a double meaning. A projector is of course an item often used in movie theatres in order to display a film. On top of this, the word pays a deeper meaning within the context of this lyric. Projection is an unhealthy defense mechanism that is viewed extremely negatively, being strongly associated with emotional abuse and bullying.

This is a reference to a quote from the film, Forrest Gump. Originally, the quote was, “stupid is as stupid does” meaning that those who do stupid things should be seen as stupid. This quote was changed in order to fit the subject of the song more accurately

Gaslighting tactics act to undermine a victim’s sense of reality and question their own memory—leaving room to substitute an alternate narrative. Metaphorically, the gaslighter is an “invading force” seeking to plant a flag (their own skewed narrative) on another’s mind.

Hannibal Lecter is a fictitious cannibal and an antagonistic figure in The Silence of the Lambs as well as its sequels.

Not literally talking to a wall, but talking to the individual is like talking to a wall, making him wonder why even bothers.

They utilize gaslighting tactics as a subconscious attempt to enforce their own reality on everyone around them to (maladaptively) stabilize a deeply wounded psyche.

The two possible conclusions to a narcissistic relationship are either giving in to the abuse/gaslighting and becoming a “supply” for the narcissist, or leaving/cutting contact to end the cycle of abuse. The chorus implies the speaker is moving towards the latter, while verse 1 implies others around them are in the former bucket.

Narcissists frequently try to reinforce the idea that they have success/power/strength by showing off.

While this may be a little bit of a stretch, this line links back to the song ‘So Predictable’, a direct quote from that. I don’t know, just thought that was cool.
