Personally this reminds me of the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ trend that went round a number of years ago. Life is tough and sometimes we need motivation to keep carrying on. Rex is reminding himself that it is enough to simply stay afloat.
Rex has been a popular musician for over 5 years now and has been trying to get used to being famous. When he performs at shows, although the people showing up are fans of his, they are all strangers to him. He doesn’t feel as if this life is completely right for him because of how stressed it can make him feel, but he recognizes he is lucky to be popular in this way in an uncertain way, knowing this “blessing” of the success in his career is the same thing making him feel strained.
In an interview with Anthony Fantano, Rex describes the song almost as a reminder for him to stay positive. He says “it’s very easy if your not in a good place, to want to give up and it’s ve sort of like the easy route. I think keeping it up as in carrying on when i really don’t want to is actually super difficult. So its definitely me attempting to to to give the motivation
to myself and to anyone that wants to hear it to keep going”.
Many people have the problem of putting themselves down and not acknowledging and celebrating their achievements and Rex is talking about how he hasn’t give himself a break or a celebration for being a popular artist
Rex seems to be talking from a different perspective than his own but talking to himself. Holding on to the theme of being able to let go and carry on with your life, Rex encourages himself to not feel guilty or attached to his fanbase. He tells himself/the audience to chase after “what you want” and to not let others hold you back from that, even if it seems like you may owe them.
