There are two separate frames here. The first is the traditional clothing of Scotland and the second is the Tasmanian Devil.
He uses the kilt as world play for killed and continues in the next line to talk about people who want to limit him through using the metaphor of “boxing him in.” He uses a simile to relate this to plaid, the fabric that is used to make kilts, it is a boxed pattern.
The second frame is that of a cartoon character from the Looney Toons named Taz, short for Tasmanian Devil. Tasmanian Devils in reality are carnivorous marsupiels found in Tasmania, Australia, hence the name. Taz was famous for spinning extremely fast and so Denzel mentions him when he talks about how he has people going crazy. He continues to extract from the Taz frame by saying that he has too many devils to deal with.
“There goes the neighborhood” is a phrase used to show disapproval towards minorities moving into a generally “white” area.
Denzel links this to the phenomenon of “White flight” in which Whites leave certain residential areas because too many minorities have moved in for them to feel comfortable.
Florida (Denzel’s state) has experienced a huge amount of white flight since the 1980’s so may be what Denzel is referencing.
Ray Charles Robinson known professionally as Ray Charles, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and composer. He lost his sight at the age of 7 due to a Glaucoma infection.
Braille is the method with which blind people read so Denzel is asking whether Charles saw the words that he felt with his hands.
Nell is speaking about the injustice that he feels many black males face when dealing with the American government.
Unequal treatment regarding housing, court proceedings and the police make Nell feel as if his brothers cannot survive through this mistreatment.
“Lash at his back” could also be referencing the brutal treatment of slaves in the past.
