Drake experienced a meteoric rise in popularity when he was only 23 due to his signing with Young Money Entertainment and the release of his 3rd mixtape, So Far Gone.

His sudden rise in the rap game brought him from wanting to buy everything to being able to purchase whatever he desires and then some.

Demetrius Flenory, otherwise known as “Big Meech,” and his brother Terry “Southwest T” were the ringleaders of Black Mafia Family (BMF); a drug trafficking ring. Atlanta was the hub of the distribution. However, they also ventured into the hip hop scene through their company BMF Entertainment. Owing to their presence in Atlanta, Meech has often been shouted out by those connected with the Atlanta scene, especially Jeezy, notably by 2 Chainz on his eponymous song “Big Meech Era”, and by Rick Ross on one of his biggest hit “B.M.F.”

Offset continues this legacy here, pointing out that many falsely claim to have accomplished what Meech did.

Drake shouts out the track’s producer, Metro Boomin. Metro has been a long time collaborator of Drake’s and is the main producer of Drizzy’s close friend and affiliate, Future. He produced most of the tracks on their collaborated album, What A Time To Be Alive.

Drake has previously shouted out Metro Boomin, along with DJ Esco, on the track “Digital Dash” which Metro also produced, rapping:

A frequent comparison made by Offset, he compares his girls to people living in the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon is wild, mysterious and unpredictable which are the same traits that his “bitch” exhibits.

An Amazonian is a member of a Greek mythical tribe of women that are superior to a normal human woman. When Offset says his bitch is “bad” she’s superior to any other basic woman around unlike one from the Amazon.

Offset is implying that he’s been high off of a very famous drug, percocets, for the last week. “Percocet” is the brand name of a narcotic pain reliever containing a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen, it is a narcotic painkiller that is highly addictive.

Offset also says that he is sipping on lean, saying he’s “geeked”. “Lean” is a mix of codeine-based prescription cough syrup, Sprite and, often, Jolly Ranchers candy. The drug is meant to give a slowed-down, tired feeling, hence the word “sleep” and “geeked”.

In the last line, Offset is saying to get out of the way of his dangerous driving, most likely because he is high off of these two drugs.

Lacoste is a upper-middle class clothing and accessory brand. In 2011’s “Amen” video, Drake can be seen wearing a Lacoste polo, but at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards, he wore a TOM FORD polo to the show.

Similarly, Drake now drinks VOSS Water instead of water from the tap. While VOSS isn’t extraordinarily expensive, drinking it regularly instead of tap water is a signifier that Drake’s lifestyle has changed from his humble beginnings.

Muhammad Ali was a professional boxer and social activist. He is widely considered one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Offset is referencing Ali’s most famous fight— Rumble in the Jungle. During the fight, Ali used a technique called “Rope-A-Dope,” where he stayed on the ropes and let his opponent, George Foreman, punch him and get tired before knocking him out.

A “Draco” is a smaller version of the AK-47 assualt rifle.

This weapon is often talked about in hip-hop by artists like Soulja Boy on his song “Beef,” and Future on his song “Draco.”

This is a shot at Cash Money’s label head Birdman and a nod to the infamous delay of Lil Wayne’s long-awaited album, The Carter V.

Carter V was initially due for a release in 2013 but was delayed multiple times by Birdman because Lil Wayne wanted to leave Cash Money for not getting paid for the album, hence Drake’s line “they gotta pay.”

After Wayne sued Birdman in 2015 for violating the album’s terms—not getting paid for it—he scored a settlement of $10 million in June 2018 and C5 was released three months later in September 2018.

“Riding the wave” is copying the “in” style (in this case, rapping) to gain popularity. This also was heavily mentioned on Drake’s March 2017 track, “Portland” where Quavo—who’s also from Migos—raps:

“The sea deep” means that there are other styles one can choose from, just not Offset’s.

“Stick” refers to a type of gun, probably automatic, which Offset boasts about shooting to “clean the streets” with, like a street-sweeping truck.

Being the leader & co-founder of OVO and one of the leaders of the new school, Drake’s claim as a boss isn’t far fetched.

These lines also reference the rap group Migos, which consists of Quavo, Takeoff, and Offset, who is featured alongside Drake on this song.

“Huncho” is one of Quavo’s nicknames, while “my set takin' off” references both Takeoff and Offset. Drake has worked with Migos as a whole on “Versace” and “Trophies (Remix)”, and with Quavo individually on “Portland.”

Metro Boomin typically announces his presence on a song by using one of his many production tags. His past tags include: “This beat is so, so, Metro”, “Metro Boomin wants some more, nigga” and “Young Metro, Young Metro, Young Metro.”

The line itself comes from the bridge of Uncle Murda’s “Right Now” and is delivered by Future, Metro Boomin’s longtime collaborator. It gained prominence after appearing on Kanye West’s hit song, “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1” and on Drake and Future’s hit collaboration “Jumpman,” and even found itself in the political sphere, making its way into a Complex interview of former presidential candidate Ben Carson and protests of Donald Trump in Chicago.

The Billboard charts became a playground for Drake; from his Hot 100 debut in May 2009, Drizzy remained in the charts for a record eight uninterrupted years, until he dropped out in the fourth week of August 2017. He came back with a debut number 1 single, “God’s Plan”, which was replaced by another debut single (a Billboard first) “Nice for What” in 2018.

In 2016, Drake and Future went on the Summer Sixteen Tour, where they participated in a 66 show in 82 days tour across North America. The tour grossed $84 million on 56 shows (due to 10 cancelled stops), making it the highest grossing rap tour of all time.

When he says on ‘88’ dates he’s combining the shows of Summer Sixteen & Boy Meets World, another tour promoting his more recent work, and thus combining the profits, which were clearly enormous.

Metro Boomin’s secondary producer tag aside from the one sang by Future in his collaboration with Uncle Murda, “Right Now”. The Young Thug version comes from Thugger’s song “Some More”.

“Based” is a term coined by bay area rapper Lil B. The term describes someone who is free spirited, being positive, and not letting anyone else change themselves. Drake refers to himself as such since, as heard in the previous bars, he’s simply proud of how far he’s come in his career.
