Bittersweet is being used to represent taste in this context as one of the senses. The line states that the person is unable to sense (as shown by taste, hear, feel, and see) the bittersweetness of their current situation until another person tells them.

This section (the chorus) is mentioning things that are wrong with the world, although it seems conflicting. Waterfalls and fireflies are generally considered beautiful so it’s odd Lincoln included this part. Perhaps he is adding this to make the song “bittersweet” as mentioned in the previous verse

Oedipus is a character in Greek mythology, who ended up fulfilling a prophecy about him killing his dad and marrying his mother. Onanism literally just means masturbation.

This line is slightly ironic, as a night spent wide awake is not a perfect night at all. This suggests the singer is suffering from insomnia, a common symptom of depression or anxiety.

a “bad day” is an expression that is often used to explain behavior that deviates from what someone would do normally; staying in bed for 24 hours might be a “bad day.” However, after many bad days in a row, the singer is admitting that they’ve planted the seeds to a cycle of bad days and is having to live with the consequences of that.

Everything’s so bad in the world these days, it often feels as if everything is a fever dream. This section is commenting on that.
