Not Trying (To Start Anything)

She bled for attention

All over my floor

Without hesitation

I bled even more

We lingered a moment

A moment too long

She whispered there softly

“Now don’t get me wrong…”

Reluctantly eyeing

Her marital ring

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

I smiled, defying

This heart on a string

I said, “Nor am I,”

Just a self-serving lie

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

Our promise divided

Together we dancеd

Her path undecided

And mе in my trance

That mirror betrayed us

Reflecting her ring

It captured my shadow

And tightened my strings

The moment was heavy

My heart bore the sting

When she sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

I smiled, defying

This heart on a string

I said, “Nor am I,”

Which we knew was a lie

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

Before it all closes

Please look in my eye

This stillness exposes

The truth we deny:

Your thorns are my roses

My soul is your sky

Faking indifference

A war I can’t win

That sigh was a dagger

Those words broke my skin

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

I wished she were lying

Still lost on that string

I said, “Nor am I,”

Which confessed everything

She sighed, “I’m not trying

To start anything.”

Not trying…

Not trying…

To start anything
