I Take It Black

I take my coffee black —

As bitter as my pride

No cream to blur the edges

No sugar hid inside

I lift it to my lips —

This cup of muddy care

And through the steam, the rising fog

I almost see you there

A flicker in the glass

A shadow near the rim —

The bitter smell of what I lost

When leaving wore me thin

You offer me the cream

The silver spoon, the grace —

Soft hands to smooth the jagged things

I’ve come to love and face

But I was never built

For sweetness or for show —

Thе courage that I lack, I keep

Away from what I know

I take my coffee black

And pour it down my throat —

To kill what kindness livеs here

To sharpen what I've wrote

And every drip that hits here

Is sure to leave a stain —

But better scars than hollow hearts

And better heat than shame

A flicker in the glass

A shadow near the rim —

The bitter smell of what I lost

When leaving wore me thin

I raise it to my lips —

This cup of carpe diem —

And through the steam and lifting fog

I swear I still can see ’em —

Ghosts I’ll never chase

Dreams I can’t turn back —

So bring me all your silver spoons…

Just know I take it black

So bring me all your silver spoons…

Just know I take it black
