Verse 1:

Danny Adaline was born down on 6th street

A couple of blocks into Jackson, Mississippi

To a mother and a father who never had dreams

But Danny was determined to break free

Danny had a sister who, couldn’t speak

She never was able to tell Danny her dreams

But Danny knew somethin about his sister, marie

He knew, she was determined to break free

Chorus 1:

He said hey, hey Marie

Girl I think you can run with me

A smile lit up her face, and Danny knew his place

And they were gonna break free

And he said hey, hey Marie

Girl I think you can run with me

A smile lit up her face, and Danny knew his place

And they were gonna break free

Verse 2:

From day one Danny always had a feeling

That he was gonna go down in history

As a writer as a singer as an ath-e-lete

But his parents never took him seriously

Danny and Marie took off in ‘93

When Danny boy was just 13

And a couple weeks later 10 year old Marie

Spoke for the first time yelling “I am free”

A couple days later they were in Tennessee

And along came a boy named Henry

Henry played the guitar with eaze

Could hit a note so good it’d make Danny wheeze

He had fled from his family up in Kentucky

And sang songs all the way, it filled him with glee

And together they all headed into Missouri

A place where they thought they could break free

Chorus 2:

Danny said hey, hey Henry

Boy I think you’re the one for me

A smile lit up each face, they began to know their place

They were gonna break free

And Danny said hey, hey Henry

Boy I think you’re the one for me

A smile lit up each face, they began to know their place

They were gonna break free

Verse 3:

About 100 miles into Missouri

Danny heard somethin that filled him with misery

Henry quietly said “man, i gotta leave”

And he left poor Danny and Marie

The lonely two continued northerly

They decided they were gonna settle in St. Louis

Danny made a guitar outta wood and some string

And Marie made a bass from an apple tree

They started playin for tips on the side of the street

They sounded so good they made 100 a week

Their most popular song was called Henry

And they sang it all the way to the city

A couple months after Danny turned 14

When they were barely making enough money to eat

A man named Willy offered to drum with them

And created a band called The Scarlet Gem

Chorus 3:

Willy said hey, Danny and Marie

Do you two wanna play with me?

A smile lit up each face, and Marie proudly plucked her bass

They had broken free, so free

After Willy said hey, Danny and Marie

Do you two wanna play with me?

A smile lit up each face, and Marie proudly plucked her bass

They had broken free, so free

Verse 4:

The band was soon the talk of St. Louis

And the song about the boy named Henry

Willy got an apartment for the three

With a good view of the city

A long while later when Marie turned 16

Danny found his little queen

A girl by the name of Valerie

A face so pretty brought Danny to his knees

She moved in it filled Danny with glee

Danny knew that he needed Valerie

Marie and Valerie sung happily

And Willy taught her how to keep a beat

The Scarlet Gem made a new hit song

It sounded so good you couldn’t go wrong

The song that made so many people feel happy

Went by the name of Valerie

Chorus 4:

It went like Hey, Hey Valerie

Girl I think you’re the one for me

I saw that smile on your face, and your glory and your grace

You make me feel so free

Everybody sang Hey, Hey Valerie

Girl I think you’re the one for me

I saw that smile on your face, and your glory and your grace

You make me feel so free

Verse 5:

At 23 Danny got married

To the girl of his dreams

They had a little boy named Louis

And he would grow up strong and free

But first Scarlet Gem had some songs to make

By now they known across the United States

And a tour across U. S. A

Was coming and Danny couldn’t wait

But the story turns real sad from here

Because Danny’s death was near

As the man who was 27 years

Was shot over a bottle of beer

Willy and Danny’s new family

Heartbroken, they couldn’t breathe

But at Danny’s funeral there was a moment

When the whole Earth sang

Chorus 5:

Everybody said, Hey, Hey Danny

Thank you for being here with me

Your music put a smile on my face, and you’ve cemented your place

Your place in history

Outro:

Hey, Danny Adaline

Why did you have to leave everybody

That frown on my face, well a smile took its place

The music made us all, feel free
