putting *(star)67 before a number on the phone (before calling) will block your number to the other person

The narrator and the person they’re talking to probably had an argument or something of the nature, he tries calling to work things out but they won’t pick up.
This line most likely references the phone troubles Pete and his on and off girlfriend had during touring. This info is explained more in depth in the book Gray, which Pete wrote as a memoir

He tried to call someone repeatedly, until he gave up and fell asleep with the phone in his hand. He’s grateful for star 67 because otherwise the person he was calling would know he was the one calling obsessively.
