He keeps saying “May I” as if he wants to do all this for her but needs her permission to ensure he doesn’t do anything that could possibly upset her. Even though what he’s asking is incredibly sweet and doesn’t need the permission, he is asking more for attention and for her to take notice in what he’s doing and recognize him as gentleman. Ed hopes that this song will “make [her] day” as although he loves her, he knows he has little chance with her so the most he can hope for is to make her happy and smile.
He adores Sara, and wants to do whatever he can to flatter her. He wants to make her smile as much as she makes him smile, so he writes her a song.
