“My last girlfriend, for the first month and a half that we were going out, her mother was living with her, and her mother’s very Catholic. We couldn’t spend the night together, so I was constantly making these drives in the middle of the night – very surreal, four in the morning, falling asleep. I really believed in the relationship, but when I was writing this song, the lyrics came out: "Pretty soon I won’t come around”. It wasn’t what I wanted – I didn’t want it to end – but there it was. It’s about the inevitability of leaving."

When he gets home, he is reminded of his past relationships and flings “bodies hang on the air”. He has had a lot of sexual encounters that she is aware of and it hurts her but she pretends it doesn’t. “If she remembers, she hides it whenever we meet”. Either way, he can’t care about her feelings because he isn’t going to stick around anyways

Duritz says that he’s, “Almost drowning in her sea”. This adds to the idea that he is overwhelmed by all of his surroundings, including the girl who he’s singing about.

Adam is on the verge of falling in love with her, we have some beautiful imagery of the overwhelming, encompassing nature of love being a sea that you drown in, or giving yourself entirely to your partner. But then, what underpins the relationship is the sexual, alluded to by her being “down on her knees” i.e. performing fellatio. We see that ultimately, there isn’t enough to make the relationship last
