Never Full

All of my life, I’ve been catching up…

Drain me to the dregs for another cup;

Kiss me, say good night just to wake me up

Earth circles the sun time and time again;

Come thunder or shine, all come by the wind…

Nine months and Spring’s children are winter-thin again

“Come to me,” beckons the ocean…

The same tired streams add nothing to me

I’m never full

I’m never full, no, no

I’m never full

You push to pull –

Can’t pull the wool… no, no

I’m never full

I’m never full

Full…

I growl with the lions for more to eat

Spine pricked for a Daniel who can’t believe

His years of devotion won’t make me sleep

I’m the earth on a midsummer’s afternoon

Demanding more ransom for every bloom…

But Hades is hungry, and water won’t do

“More to me!” Bellowed and braying –

“Make him bleed!” Each bite, redder meat

I’m never full

I’m never full, no, no

I’m never full

Your forfeit’s cruel

Let mercy rule, oh no

And I’m never full

I’m never full

Full…

Had a dream of old death knocking on our door

He paid me in long life for room and board –

First the den, then the nursery – each year he took more

When I woke and I saw you, I loved you twice

The amount that I would had you never died

Here’s to swallowing tears, here’s to water we cry

“Come to me homeless and fainting

Pour your grief to the ocean I’ll drink…”
