Maybe in my next life

I’ll move to that small town

And I’ll work at the bowling alley

I’ll join the softball league

That meets hot Wednesday evenings

And doesn’t care about losing

‘Cause they drink Dos Equis at the bar

It’s kinda funny how everyone knows everybody here

And I’ll take up smoking just because

My guy friends are always blazing up

And I’m in love with one of ‘em

And I love him

The way I love pylons

Boozy dinner parties in backyards

And Frank Sinatra

I love the stars

Now that I can see ‘em

If I evеr give up I’m moving to Nebraska

I’m moving to the pylons

I’m moving to Nеbraska

He drives a classic car

That’s beat up but it’s working

He talks to it like it’s got feelings

And maybe it does

He comes into work sometimes

And he talks to me like I’m his baby

He’s friends now with all the employees

And he always stays ‘til I get off

Starts a war with a soda gun

And by the time we leave we’re soaking

The air is warm in the parking lot

The neon sign has a drunken buzz

We smoke cigarettes and smell like fruit punch

And we gaze out on

All the pylons

We drink booz on yellow curbs

And listen to Sinatra

We bump hands once

And wait for the midnight sun

If I ever give up I’m moving to Nebraska

I’m moving to the pylons

I’m moving to Nebraska

We go to parties every weekend

We drink in basements in stucco houses

We smoke hookah on their carpets

And we sit too close like fucking children

When he gets sick, I’m getting sick too

If it’s been two days, he says, “I missed you”

At every wedding I put down plus two

Put down plus two

Put down plus two

And at the weddings

I pretend we’re married

As I apologize for his terrible dancing

Call it co-dependent

But I love taking him home

When he’s had too much and spiraled out of control

But I still can’t tell him

That I love him so

And one night

In the middle of June

I’m standing next to a fish tank in the living room

And outside

Through the screen door

Sinatra’s on the stereo

Fairy lights are in the jars

And there he is, leaning in

To a pretty girl up against a fence

With pylons looking like aliens in the distance

And there I am, feeling sick

Angrier than I’ve ever been

Feeling trapped like these fucking fish

Cursing him

Cursing him and this fucking state

Cursing myself for never saying anything

And now it’s too late

Now it’s too late

Now it’s too late

I walk out the front door

Like I’m stepping into space

I’m ready to drift away

I’m ready to drift away

Running down the street

I hear him running after me

Saying, “Are you crazy?

You’re in your fucking bare feet!”

Running down the street

And the asphalt’s warm beneath me

The breeze feels lovely

And I finally feel free

Eventually, he catches up to me

Hands on his knees, struggling to breathe

I gaze up slow

At whatever god

And wouldn’t you know?

We’re standing beneath pylons

And I say, “What am I to you baby?

When to me you’re everything?”

He says, “Why did you start smoking?”

I blush and turn away

He says, “I kissed somebody else thinking

I’d never be enough for you

You could move to a city

And have anything you wanted to.”

I said, “Baby in my past life

I moved to the big town

And I tried to be a musician

The men didn’t respect me there

I knew I’d never make it

Unless they saw me naked

So, I sang the shit I wanted to

I never let them tell me who

I was going to be

That life was painful, this one is sweet

I dream of nothing but you and me

And you’re driving me crazy!

‘Cause I love you

The way I love pylons

Boozy dinner parties in back yards

And Frank Sinatra

I love the stars

Now that I can see ‘em

I’m so fucking glad I’m here in Nebraska

I’m here beneath the pylons

I’m with you in Nebraska”

And now we have two boys and a girl

You know what they say about them being your whole world

We still drink and party like best friends

But a few years ago, we finally quit smoking

There are weddings and funerals

And he’s my plus one to ‘em all

Our kids play golf and basketball

And we’re the best damn cheerleaders of them all

Maybe in my next life

Yeah

Maybe in my next life

Maybe, maybe

Maybe in my next life
