[Francis and the Lights]
Oh, oh, oh, incredible
[B.K.P.]
Roaches on concrete, bitches in the backseat
I was talking back when I had to sneak high up the street
A skinny headed, curly headed stone headed Pittsburgh boy
One of my niggas ain't have his dad
I'm the only nigga that ain't want no choice
Maine, Rahmar, Elliott and them
Leisure Lake was a party back when
Getting high and I repeat it all again
Big booty bitches and school again
I'm still finding myself creatin regrets
I remember smoking weed in the backyard
Had to sneak around because I ain’t wanna get caught
Okay now, grand opening grand closing
Four Twenty, nigga’s fooling
Summer school I was always clueless
But the movement gave me improvement
Our summer don’t, that summer
That summer don’t define me no more
That summer died, that summer time don’t got no time no more
[Francis and the Lights]
Summer friends don’t stay, stay around
Summer friends, summer friends
Summer friends don’t stay, hey
[B.K.P.]
Oh I used to kill’em with the curly hair
I remember hanging with friends going everywhere
Dad was working late, coming home was always a nightmare
I would smoke til dawn
Sold my ones like an auctioneer, hugh, hugh!
Now I miss them trill days, all the time every time, every day, wait
Already getting blessing, now God he got my fate
Never let a friendship get in my way
Never let a mention get in my way
Wrote all about my wrongs so fuck what they say
Leisure Lake, Boyd, Leisure again
Leisure Lake, Boyd, Leisure again
Some of my homegirls just wanted to go berserk
I remember real friends but they flaked apart
Cause if it ain’t work, it’ll never work
It’s been a minute since I called on a friend
Fucked up and left all my friends, all my friends
All my friends, all my…
[B.K.P.]
What comes around
Summer friends, summer…
You’re my friend…
Summer friends only come around
Come around, hey
And some of us…
13, 50, 13, 50, hey
13, 50, 13, 50, hey
13, 13, 13, hey, hey, hey
You’re my friend
13, 50, 13, hey, 50
So put your head on my shoulder
Citywide, citywide, citywide, hey
Citywide, citywide, citywide, hey
Citywide, citywide, citywide, hey
Citywide, citywide, citywide, hey
Citywide, citywide, citywide
Citywide, citywide, citywide
Citywide, citywide, citywide
Citywide, citywide, citywide
Citywide, citywide, citywide…
I will wait around for you
I will wait around for you
So lay your head on my table
Lay your head on my table
May the lord give your journey sturdy
May you be successful, grant me favors
He’ll bring you back safely, I love you
[Francis and the Lights]
When I was so young before I could remember
I would smoke with the gang from october to december
Even when I changed, my niggas never changed up
I always bring up friends, lost friends, old friends, those friends gone
When I was so young before I could remember
I would smoke with the gang from october to december
Even when I changed, my niggas never changed up
I always bring up friends, lost friends, old friends, those friends gone
Francis and the Lights says,
“my lord…incredible
I believe…”
In Chicago, shooting deaths spike in the summer, so that’s the time you’re most likely to have a friend die.
On “Pusha Man/Paranoia”, Chance says,
Cause everybody dies in the summer
Wanna say ya goodbyes, tell them while it’s spring
I heard everybody’s dying in the summer
So pray to God for a little more spring
Also, note the wordplay “some of my friends” and “summer friends.”
The beginning of this hook has a more personal reference to a “you” before going into the more general theme of the murder rates in Chicago in the summer. This line has a similar tone to a line from “Pusha Man/Paranoia” by Chance:
I know you scared
You should ask us if we scared too
I know you scared
Me too
I know you scared
You should ask us if we scared too
If you was there
Then we’d just knew you cared too
This line is similar to something a child might say to a new friend. It goes along with part of what I say with this hook as a whole, in the memories of my friends are deprived of the juvenile innocence because of the inherent murder there. There’s no ability to have that “summertime friend” that are fantasized about in movies or books. Summer instead becomes a time to dodge bullets as opposed to having fun.
