The pre-chorus sees Billie equally comparing herself to the man she wants a relationship with. Her description of him ties into the image of the “bad boy” that any sane father would disapprove of. This doesn’t frighten her, however; instead, she counters by telling him how similar they are.

Billie would later explain in a video for Rolling Stone that these lyrics are sarcastic – if this man can lie about his characteristics and be “fake”, she can certainly do the same.

Billie describing herself as the “might seduce your dad type” garnered some minor controversy due to the singer only being 17 at the time of the song’s release. The line is intentionally questionable, however, and serves to drive the point home. This “bad guy” character that Billie is pretending to be seems to be boastful and proud of their actions (“I’m only good at bein' bad”), and they threaten to go to extremes without caring about the emotional destruction they may cause in the process.

This line is taken literally in the song’s music video, which sees Billie wearing a white shirt while her nose bleeds.

The Pop Song Professor explains:

The contrast of the “white shirt” with the red of her “bloody nose” likely illustrates with colors the internal change her character undergoes. Billie Eilish has often talked about how colors are very expressive to her, and she loves to tie visuals to her songs in music videos. It makes sense then, that she would use the imagery of a white shirt, pure and untainted, now corrupted by blood, symbolizing pain as a metaphor for the loss of innocence.

Billie explained the “bad guy” lyric in a August 2019 Billboard interview:

It’s a weird thing to hear come out of a girl’s mouth. I think Nicki Minaj said in one of her songs that she’s the bad guy, and I didn’t realize that until recently….It’s such a cool juxtaposition of that sentence. Why do people resonate with it? I know why I resonate with it, but they’re all my own reasons.

The Nicki Minaj song that Billie refers to is “Chun-Li,” where Minaj raps:

Oh, I get it, huh, they paintin' me out to be the bad guy
Well it’s the last time you gonna see a bad guy do the rap game like me

Both Eilish and Minaj’s “bad guy” lines reference a scene in the 1983 movie, Scarface, where Tony Montana complains:

Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There’s a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!

Billie further explained the idea behind the line in a July 2019 KIIS FM interview:

It’s basically making fun of everyone and their personas of themselves…. In general, I feel like you will never catch a bad bitch telling everyone she’s a bad bitch…. If you’re going around all the time saying, like, ‘Yeah, I’m bad, I’m always breaking rules and doing this and doing that.’ You’re not. I know that because I used to say that and I wasn’t. Bad kids, bad boys, bad bitches, whatever, they do that shit and they don’t even know.

To be “cynical” means to be distrustful toward human integrity and sincerity.

Cynicism is a part of the facade that Billie is creating and putting on in “bad guy” in order to mock the “tough guy” later mentioned in the pre-choruses.

Yet another line that is taken literally in the music video.

Though the bruises on her knees could be interpreted as her begging for something repeatedly, this seems to be alluding more to kneeling down to perform a sexual act. It should be noted that the male subject of this song already has a girlfriend, though this would align with Billie’s boasts in the chorus, in particular being the type to “make your girlfriend mad tight”.
