Five lines written on a postcard
Five lines I'm a little closer
Five lines written on a postcard for you
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
You keep my head unsteady and my hands shake
You wait until I'm standing in your landscape
Said we're looking at the stars
We're floating into empty spaces, I know
That we're looking at the stars
Our burning open sky illustrated, no more
Five lines written on a postcard
Five lines and then it's over
Five lines sitting on your dresser for you
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
It's so permanent
Yeah it's so permanent
Any way I tell it to you
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Faint and numb
You keep my head unsteady and my hands shake
Fought another day, and now
You wait until I'm standing in your landscape
Said we're looking at the stars
We're floating into empty spaces, I know
That we're looking at the stars
Our burning open sky illustrated, no more
Said we're looking at the stars
Connected by our constellation, I know
That we're looking at the stars
Our bodies lie in separate places, reposed
Five lines written on a postcard
Five lines I'm a little closer
Five lines written on a postcard for you
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Either way you go
Like straight out of a Nicholas Sparks novel—Two lovebirds separated by distance can always look up at the stars at night-time to feel connected to each other.
Singer Jon Simmons breaks down the concept in more detail in his noisey interview:
And when I sing about looking at the stars, it’s like the only connection you can really have with somebody when you’re away from them is looking at the sky at the same time and looking at the stars and constellations and the moon. And that’s kind of a beautiful thing, but it’s pretty sad as well.
Simmons further states in the article that the loved one “slips away” in his scenario. The line “We’re floating into empty spaces” exhibits clever wordplay around the word “spaces”. It can be interpreted on one hand as the relationship being drifted apart into nothingness, and also, while looking up at the sky they realize the stars disappeared into empty space.
I’ll always remember the words i’m writing down on this postcard. (might also be referring to the person that’s receiving the postcard) The author may be writing some sort of love letter. Look at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/permanent
I look up at the stars and i feel like we’re both looking. The author still feels close.
The author is experiencing possible anxiety, Faint and numb may be referring to “Tingling or numbness in the hands and fingers” a sign of a panic attack/anxiety. (http://www.webmd.com/anxiety-panic/guide/panic-attack-symptoms) he fights through it daily, and describes how his weakness is being taken advantage of: “you wait until i’m standing in your landscape”
