Statism – the belief that the state should control either the economy, social policies, or both.
We don’t need a “savior” in the form of the state to provide us with what we need. Most of what we need – food, clothes, appliances – is provided by the free market through voluntary exchanges. The services the state monopolizes can also be provided by the free market.
In this song Eric July advocates anarcho-capitalism, a political philosophy which calls for the abolition of government in favor of voluntary interactions and free markets.
Government claims to fight monopolies (with the antitrust law), but it is really the largest, most powerful monopoly of them all.
The state is just a social construct, or “a state of mind”. It only exist if we consent to it’s existence.
Private companies have to provide good service to their customers, or they will switch to the competition. The police have no competitors – you have to pay for their services through taxes – so they don’t have an incentive not to “suck”. This is due to the state’s monopoly on violence. Therefore, complaining about the police while supporting the state is inconsistent.
Government corruption is just a symptom of the real problem – the corrupt concept of the state. Hence, if you support the idea of having a state, you should be held responsible for the results, government corruption being one of them.
In libertarian political discourse, “who will build the roads” is the stereotypical weak, fear-based, pro-government arguement. It is often mockingly shortened to “muh roads”. Libertarians believe that without government intervention, private contractors can build the roads and provide all the other services that are currently provided by the government.
People are used to lookin at government handouts like they’re “free stuff”, but everything the government gives is in fact funded by our taxes. If people used critical thinking and weren’t “hypnotized” by politicians, they could see that they are being bribed with their own money.
The monopoly on violence is the idea that only the state should be allowed to use violence – through the police, the army, etc. It is a defining characteristic of the state.
